What to Pack Last When Moving
You decided the time has come to relocate.
Brimming with excitement, you start to prepare. You called your friends and family, bought a new home, and hired a moving company.
You step through your doorway with an arm full of moving boxes, take a look at your current home and then it hits you. That sinking feeling in your chest.
You have a lot of stuff to pack.
You shake the feeling off and resolve to pack everything.
“But what do I need to pack first or what do I need to save for last?” you ponder.
Examples of items you should wait to pack last include toiletries, clothing, bedding, and computers and laptops.
One of the first boxes that should be out of the moving truck is toiletries. Toilet paper is the obvious one. The last thing anyone wants to do when they are on the urge of wetting themselves is search through two dozen boxes for teepee.
Naturally, soap should be close to the toilet paper. If you use the bathroom, proper hygiene dictates you must wash your hands, especially if you plan on shaking hands with your new neighbors.
Your toothbrush and toothpaste also fall under important toiletries. You don’t know who might knock on your door the morning after a move. A foul mouth of morning breath is not the first impression you want to make on your neighbors.
A box of clean towels and inseason clothing is important to have readily available as well. Assume you step out of your first shower in your new home. You are mortified to find you cannot remember where you put your clothes.
You do not want to spend half-an-hour cold, wet and naked searching your home for something to wear, especially if you have not had the opportunity to hang your curtains yet. That is definitely not the first impression you want to make on your neighbors.
Another thing you want to have conveniently accessible is bedding. Most people are exhausted after moving, which often entails lifting heavy boxes in the hot sun and up flights of stairs. You likely won’t want to begin unpacking.
If you have your pillows, sheets and comforter in hand, you could throw them on your bed and save unpacking the rest of your belongings for another day.
Your computer or laptop should be one of the last items you should pack, and one of the first items off of the moving truck. Why? Because the Internet is one of the best resources to have when relocating.
For example, imagine it is the first night in your new home. You are starving, but you don’t feel like cooking. You might not know what restaurants are near your new home, but any search engine will help you find what you want or where to find it.
Computers and laptops are also convenient forms of entertainment. Whereas setting up a television may involve fiddling with spools of wire for an hour, all you have to do is flip the screen of a laptop to get connected.
Lastly, do not underestimate the power of social media. By updating friends and family on the status of your move on Facebook or Twitter, you might get a few volunteers to keep you company and help you with the move.
