What Do You Do While the Movers Are Working?
Once you have hired movers, you may think there is nothing for you to do, but don’t just sit around and twiddle your thumbs. There are plenty of different things you should be doing. In fact, the more you stay active, the more you can ensure that getting into your new places is as stress-free as possible. Your work begins before the moving company ever arrives. You know you already need to pack up your belongings in boxes, but there is much more.
Before They Arrive
Before the movers get to your home, you need to have everything packed up and ready to go. It’s very important for everyone involved that you label everything properly. You don’t necessarily have to list what’s in the box, but you do need to indicate where it goes in your new home. That way, the people getting everything into your new place will be able to put the boxes in the right room, which means less work for you. Additionally, buy sticky notes or some type of stickers and then label which room each piece of furniture should go in.
If you have any extremely valuable items, like jewelry, then you may wish to consider packing a small valuables box and placing it in your personal vehicle or keeping it with your luggage.
Packing an Overnight Kit
Once everything arrives at your new place, you won’t have time to get settled in on that first day. That means you need to pack an overnight kit that will provide you and your family everything needed to get through to the next day. Your overnight kit should include:
- A change of clothes for everyone in the household.
- Sheets
- Towels
- Blankets
- Soap
- Shampoo
- Snacks
- First aid supplies
You can put anything you would like in the kit. Just try to think of what you actually will need for one overnight stay before you can unpack your household after moving.
While the Movers Are Working
While the movers are getting everything out of your house, you will need to keep active as well. If you have children or pets, then it is extremely important to keep them out of the way. Even well-behaved children could get underfoot and even lead to injury. Pets can easily get underfoot or even escape through an open door. During the process, you can spend time keeping the children and pets occupied so that the move out will run smoothly.
While Waiting at Your New Home
If you get to your new place before the movers arrive, then you can do some research. Locate a coffee shop nearby or other establishment that offers free wi-fi. Then, you can jump on the internet and start researching your new home town. It may be a good idea to find a few local eating establishments that deliver. You have so much unpacking to do that you likely won’t have time to get the kitchen in order right away.
You may think you will just have to sit around and do nothing while the movers work, but there is actually quite a lot for you to take care of. The more you stay active, the better you can ensure the move goes smoothly.
