Never Ever Move These Things

There are certain items that you just should not take along with you when you are moving because they could pose a threat to you or the movers. Because some of them are personal items, you may be tempted to box them up, under the assumption that they can’t be “that” dangerous. However, there is a reason why they are called “banned items” and many professional movers will actually give you a list of things that they will not put on their truck. If you try to break their rules, they may cancel the contract or they may charge you big fees. For the safety of everyone involved, be sure to not pack any of these items.

Pesticides or any Poisons

You probably have different types of poisonous chemicals in your current home, but you shouldn’t bring them along. They include pesticides, bug sprays of any type, and weed killers. If you have any of these products and if any cans have the poison symbol on them, you should not pack them for the movers. Instead, you need to dispose of them properly and then purchase new products as you need them.

Poisons can also include a wide variety of different chemicals that also could be dangerous. This could include a so many different products that it’s nearly impossible to list them all, but some of the products in this category include:

  • Bleach
  • Nail Polish Remover
  • Lighter Fluid
  • Kerosene
  • Propane
  • Ammonia
  • Varnishes
  • Paint Thinner

Essentially, you should always stick with the same adage: “when in doubt, choose the safe road.” If you think something may be dangerous, then it’s best to get rid of it when moving.

Aerosol Cans

These cans are under pressure and there is a warning on them to that effect. If you will be traveling at any time, the cans could explode, but this is especially true during extreme temperatures like the summer and winter. Aerosol cans can include hair spray, spray paint, and spray air fresheners as well as nonstick cooking spray.

Batteries

Most people completely forget that batteries of any type can actually explode in certain circumstances. You should remove all batteries in your house, including in remote controls, and throw them out. This also includes batteries for cars and lawnmowers.

Weapons

If you do have guns, you need to move them properly and never ask the movers to handle them in any way. All guns should be unloaded and locked in a carrying case. They should be loaded in your own vehicle separately from the ammunition. Any types of weapons including knives or decorative pieces should be handled by you only.

When you hire movers, you have to be responsible with their safety as well as yours. That means not packing things that could pose any sort of threat. While you may not be thrilled with throwing out belongings, it’s more important to keep safety in mind. Be sure to follow any instructions that your moving company provides as well as to what can and can’t be packed up and relocated.
